If there’s one thing I wish I had taken more seriously earlier at the University of Missouri, it’s getting involved on campus. I know how overwhelming it can feel when you’re juggling classes, internships, and trying to figure out what you actually want to do after graduation. But getting involved isn’t just “another thing” to add to your plate, it’s one of the few things that actually makes everything else easier.
When you join organizations tied to your field, you’re doing more than just building your résumé. You’re building real, usable skills. Whether it’s creating campaigns, working on a team, or pitching ideas, these experiences mirror what you’ll actually be doing in your career. Groups like American Advertising Federation (AAF), Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), and (of course) Matchbook Marketing give you hands-on opportunities you just can’t get from lectures alone. Talking about a real campaign you worked on with a team lands way better in an interview than just listing coursework.
Additionally, the networking aspect is often undervalued. Being involved puts you in rooms with professors, guest speakers, alumni, and peers who are all figuring it out alongside you. Those connections turn into internship leads, job referrals, and mentors who actually want to help. Mizzou makes these opportunities accessible through a wide range of student organizations, alumni events, and industry panels, where career fairs, workshops, and mentorship connections feel much more approachable once you’re already involved in campus life.
But beyond career-related benefits, involvement also supports your mental health. College can feel isolating, especially in larger programs. Having a group to show up to every week where people know your name and you’re working toward something together makes a huge difference. It gives structure to your week and a sense of purpose outside of grades and deadlines. Even just having people to grab coffee with after a meeting can make campus feel a lot smaller and more manageable.
If you’re not sure where to start, resources like Mizzou Engage can help you explore different clubs by interest or major, and involvement fairs at the beginning of each semester are a great way to get a sense of what’s out there. Matchbook Marketing is a great place to dive in. It combines professional development, real client work and a supportive community. You’re building experience and connections from day one.
At the end of the day, you don’t need to join everything. Just pick one or two things that genuinely interest you and show up consistently. That’s where the growth happens. College goes by fast, and the students who seem the most confident post-grad aren’t the ones who had perfect GPAs. They’re the ones who got involved, tried things and built something beyond the classroom.
